hey, i was thinking about using some RIT dye to dye a pair of white vans...

but i was wondering, would the rubber sole dye as well?

idealy i would like the canvas upper to dye and the sole to stay white..

anyone have any experience with this or know if it would work?

I dont have any experience with dyeing vans but I did use some liquid acrylic on a pare of purcells.

I would recommend this over dyeing.

rit isnt the best dye in the world.

the acrylic that I used was amazing it lasted till I tossed the sneakers.

I believe it was fw liquid acrylic. I apllied it with a piant brush and was pretty careful not to stain the soles.

as for your question about the soles staying white... when was the last time you saw clean vans soles?? they are stain magnets, although they wont absorb the dye Im sure they will become discolored if you arent extremely careful.

good luck.

^^^ Yeah just cover the soles with tape, maybe even hot glue around the top of the sole and peel it off later. As long as the dye doesnt touch the sole youre fine. On the other hand, if you were to dye the sole, it might turn out kind of cool with a little off tone.

I dyed a pair of white Old Navy slip ons red with RIT dye and had great results. The sole and trim have a very faint tint of red (which has worn off, for the most part) while the canvas part went completely red.

This is how they looked while they were still drying:

Im telling you. forget about the dye.

its all about the liquid acrylic.

the dye will bleed if its not right, the acrylic wont.

the dye will fade fast, the acrylic wont.

the dye is hard to control, the acrylic isnt

Im sure you see my point.

this was a few years back man.

Ive got no pics Im sorry. all I can tell you is that it worked perfectly.

I took a taupe pair of JPs and painted them black.

it took one coat.

with dye you will need to reapply unless you get a really good dye.
