this is what i was thinking, when guy in shop was telling me i thought it sounded a bit excessive to take so much off the bike.

yeah, a bit excessive. i just changed my entire crankset, didnt realize you could just take the chainring off until i got downstairs to ride my bike. good looking out guys.

i wish i had a camera filming myself as i learn to ride fixed. i just fell over clipped in trying to unweight the rear. god, i looked like a douchebag. would have been great on video.

if you get a new chainring, grab a track one if your cranks are 144 bcd, but otherwise most are good as long as they are not ramped and pinned. ramped/pinned rings are shaped for easy gear changes, aka popping off on a fixed gear bike.

you can just undo your bolts to put on the new ring. no need to remove the crank arms. buy a ring bolt spanner. park makes one. that way you can make sure those bolts are nice and tight. dont' want to end up with a taco'd ring!

I picked up a NOS cro-mo frame and forks on eBay for £20 and then I managed to score some second hand wheels pretty cheap so I decided to knock together a singlespeed:

singlespeed.jpg

I've just taken it on it's virgin voyage up and down the cyclepath. First impressions are good (though I should possibly have given more consideration towards comfort rather than style when picking out a saddle). Spins a lot on the downhills and is very stubbon on the uphills, but that's just the nature of singlespeed.

I've only run it with the off road wheelset at the moment, the road wheels are in the background (the rear is rather wonky but I new it was 'used' when I bought it).

Basically what I was after was just a bike. No special technology with wierd acronyms, no funky shaped tubing or space age gizmos.

A bike, pure and simple, sort of like when I was little and I went everywhere and road everything on my old 10 speed (which technically had 21 gears but you get the sort of image I'm trying to create here).

This is a bit of a change for me, because I usually ride this:

any of you guys ever post on or lurk at Bike Forums? i have been for the past month, but damn, i think i'm done there. i never thought i'd come across a message board that rushes to judgement quicker than SuFu, but i believe i have found it. started a couple threads about my recent BrassKnuckle build through Trackstar (both positive and some negative aspects, trying to be helpful and informative) and got totally reamed. that place is crazy, IMO.

that said, i heart my new bike... will post pictures here soon.

Haha, weird. I just read that thread last night, but I didn't realize it was you. Yeah, bike forums could be pretty whack sometimes, I suggest joining the nyc fixed boards if you aren't already on there. Now on with the pictures plz!

yeah, it just baffles me that so many people got so angry about pointing out some minor flaws despite being overtly positive...so weird. but i'll check out that other board, thanks!

i'll snap some shots tonight and post them, if i'm able to get out of the office at a reasonable hour.

haha..if you think singlespeed/fixed is bad, check out the roadie forums.

the regional boards on bikeforums are definitely better. if you want opinions from riders in your area, there's no reason to venture out to the main board. use the search function if you really need to know something. some of the larger US cities have started their own forums, so count yourself lucky if you live in one of those. have a nice ride.

My whip.

1985 Skyway Streetbeat F/F w/ NOS parts.

I'm really scared about riding my bike in some parts of SF. Just yesterday I almost got hit off my bike and jacked by three black dudes. I was riding on market near the porn shops and liquor stores and as I was coming close to the corner I saw a black dude signal his friends. As soon as his friends got there they were huddling in front of me about 10 feet away. I didn't have much time to react so I quickly turned and wobbled left as I felt a hand knick my backpack. I sped off and was scared shitless.

i rarely post on bikeforums anymore. Your thread got out of hand, but I still think you should have called t* and worked it out before flaming them in a thread. True, they were minor things, but stuff like the hub shouldn't go overlooked when getting built, so i would have called them up. Small issue, small fix, no problem.

there was a mass exodus when SF, Chicago and NYC got their own vanilla boards. much better and much more community oriented on those. Bikeforums seems to be way noob oriented lately and it gets old really fast. I feel sorry for Josh having to mod that place.

Plus, bikeforums has dutret, who I'm contemplating driving to GA to stab with something rusty.

damn sycamore ... that bike is hot! be careful.. don't want that thing to get stolen and turned into a scraper bike.

BFSSFG toronto fixed ftw!

ps: i love the roadie forum. guys there are like, "man i totally got this great deal at the LBS, the wrench changed out my cassette/cranks/whatever and only charged me $40!" you overpaid, suburban assholes. learn how to fix your own bike. that, and the incessant threads asking for bib recommendations. (shudders)

It's coming out in July on DVD.

Went to the premier today, shit was ballistic.

Those who didn't see it really missed out, but will soon see it on DVD in about a month.

WORD.

Ridiculous tricks and more MASH.

Soundtrack totally changed too from the 20 min version.
