How much do samurais shrink?

Hi all, I apologize if this is a newbie-esque question.

I bought a pair of sami s510xx19oz, and as per the suggestions of members on this forum, I soaked them in hot water when I first go them. The water was around a temperature where if I left my hands in for about 10 seconds it got really uncomfortable. (Not completely scalding, but pretty damn hot.) I was wondering if these are probably done shrinking yet, since I plan on getting them hemmed in the next few days. Would soaking them again in hot water be a bad idea and possibly lose excessive indigo? Or would you recommend that I soak them again to get all of the shrinking out of the way.

I'd soak sammy's 3hours- 5hours in hot water to make sure you get all the shrinkage out. I wouldn't worry so much about indigo lose, as long as you don't rub the jeans... Abrasion is the main cause I believe for indigo loss. I soaked my sammy exports twice with no issues...

yeah, a couple of hours of a hot soak will probably take care of you.

these jeans are not going to reach maximum shrinkage for a few washes, so i'd hem accordingly-----give yourself some room for more shrink. of course, you can always stretch the legs.

I have never lost indigo from just a soak, just don't agitate and you should be fine.

I'm going to go home and soak in hottest bathwater possible when I get home. I'll probably also get them hemmed with an extra 1.5 inches or something too and just cuff them.

This will be my SECOND time soaking them though, will they lose a lot of their stiffness? Indigo loss apparently isn't a problem...

Btw After I soaked them the first time, after they dried they stood up on their own when propped against the wall. I was like :eek:. I took some pics that I can post later if anyone wants to see.

Starch loss is accelerated when soaked in hot water though correct? Is it minimal or does it require some thought of 'do I really want to do this, and lose all that starch?'

Also is jeans are sanforised, is there any point of soaking at all?

from what i understand, the practice of noriotoshi is meant to remove starch and other manufacturing goo that would damage jeans over time. i would think that a soak before wearing would apply to both sanforized and unsanforized jeans for this reason.

But I was under the impression that people WANT starch in their jeans, to keep them rigid and so they can show creases and crinkles more easily.. I know that a raw pair will show more wear compared to a pre distressed wash pair

actually a raw or one-wash pair of jeans doesn't require starch to get good creasing. if you feel you must do something to aid in crease formation, spraying the honeycomb and lap area with water will suffice.

but your mileage may vary.

I've done it with APC (and Pace, sd-103...) also, in 60C without detergents and "Wool"-program. It's really gentle soak-like. I doubt that anyone can tell just by looking if it's done either way

But to be safe, I wouldn't recommend my way (only for lazy bastards like me).
