Sri Lanka anyone?

Hi,

I'm going to be in Hong Kong for the next 2 weeks, and was really interested in taking like a 4 day trip somewhere exotic and less common (less common, meaning not thailand/japan/korea/etc..)

Has anyone been to Sri Lanka very recently? I read on the State Dep't site that it's not that safe because of some terrorist group, is it safe? I'd stay around the "touristy" area around Colombo on the west side, if i did go, if that makes a difference.

any opinions?

Sir Lanka? I don't know where you are from, but over here that's probably the number one last-minute destination.

Sri-Lanka has had a three-side veiled civil war going on for the last god knows how many years. There are a lot of kinappings in the country and the fragile cease-fire is constantly broken. I would not recommend going there. Why not go to Thailand to check out the Buddhist temples (or even Tibet)?

thought you needed to get permission from the indian gov't to go there? plus, wasn't it devastated by the tsunami a few years back?
