Is slubbiness = better fade & contrast?

not better, necessarily, but more interesting.

i thought the whole obsession towards slubbiness began when people got tired of their near-perfect weave they were getting from jet looms, and noticed one of the reasons why the vintage denim was superior was that they were made from old and slow shuttle looms. when it's slubby, you get more irregular fades with more personalities. but if that's not your thing, it's probably not better.

Slubby denim in general gives a better fade but with less contrasts. The weave is usually looser and therefore doesn't form tight creases, so you get less contrast. At the same time, the denim is more beautiful and therefore will continue to look more beautiful as it fades.

this explanation seems to make sense...also explains why my 1.5 year old Dior 21cm Japanese raws, which are quite slubby (and the slubs are becoming more apparent as it gets washed...there's almost a vertical wear thing going on) has practically no sign of whiskers or contrasty fade marks anywhere on the jeans. It's been bugging the hell out of me for a while...one day i tell the jeans "Damn you, I am never wearing you again" only to put them on 2 days later. This is seeming like a dysfunctional marriage.

doesn't it also have something to do with the dye process? if the yarn was completely soaked all the way through with indigo, it'll be difficult to achieve contrast. but if the yarn is still whitish in the middle, you'll start to see contrasts much faster.
