Rag & Bone Jeans

I've heard many good things about Rag & Bone. How does it compare to other names such as Rogan, 45rpm, Paper Denims etc? Do you know if the dye used is synthetic or natural? Will selvedge jeans wear better if you do not wash them/wash them very infrequently (i.e. every 6 months)?

Thanks in advance for your replies.

'Better' is subjective, it just depends on the look you are after. If you wear them a long time before washing they will develop more contrasting and sharper wear marks when you finally come to wash them.

When you wear a pair of 'raw' denims, the creases are sharper than washed denim, due to the stiffness of the fabric - so there's great chance achieve stronger 'whiskering' on the crotch, knees etc.

Obviously washing them infrequently means you get to keep a dark denim look longer. It just depends on what look you are after. This applies to all denim, selvage or not.

Frequent washing will help the twisted seam effect if your jeans are non-sanforized selvage denims.

Rag & Bone - gonna have a look next week hopefully icon_smile.gif

for those who are wondering what differences will regular washing and infrequent washing do...I have two very good examples to show off that belong to me which also happens to be the 2 pair of jeans I wear the most. One which I have been washing very often after every few wears due to the high amount of sweating when I'm wearing it and another which I try my best not to wash at all unless it's absolutely necessary...i.e. smells or makes me feel uncomfortable/itchy. I will post the pics up as soon as I buy a new digital camera. IMO I believe they provide a very realistic example of how it will most probably look like after a few years. Hope it'll help all you guys out there make a decision on what kinda look you wanna achieve on em! I think you should do that to ringring.

Cool idea. icon_smile.gif Look forward to seeing your pics Futuretalk.

There's quite a few pictorial references already on the web for worn jeans:

http://www.45rpm.jp/denim/detail.jsp?id=010 - a pair of jeans that has been washed frequently over 7 years of use.

<a href="http://www.45rpm.jp/denim/detail.jsp?id=009" target="_blank">http://www.45rpm.jp/denim/detail.jsp?id=009'>http://www.45rpm.jp/denim/detail.jsp?id=009"] <a href="http://www.45rpm.jp/denim/detail.jsp?id=009" target="_blank">http://www.45rpm.jp/denim/detail.jsp?id=009</a> - a pair of jeans that has been washed infrequently over 7 years of use.

[url=http://www.nudiejeans.com/thisisnudie/worn_jeans.php ]http://www.nudiejeans.com/thisisnudie/worn_jeans.php - a bunch of nudies that have been worn a lot before washing. There's some severe whiskering going on there! icon_smile_shock.gif - Notice the contrast between the Nudies and the far less severe look of the jeans in the 45rpm link above.

[url=" http://www.denimjunkies.com/jeans.htm"] <a href="http://www.denimjunkies.com/jeans.htm" target="_blank">http://www.denimjunkies.com/jeans.htm</a> - a vintage jeans site - presumably, these have all been washed and worn frequently. Notice how all the wear marks are far less severe than the Nudie examples.

I had a look at some. Nice jeans. Light weight denim, less than 12oz IMO. Regular right-hand twill, double ringspun. Very nicely made with attention to detail in the stitching. The wash I looked at was a basic handbrush n rinse - which is one of my favourite washes, albeit a relatively cheap wash. Non selvage.

Can't tell if the dye is natural or not. My guess is that it's not, and that it doesn't matter. Very expensive - some of that due, no doubt to them being 'made in Kentucky' (and from Japanese denim). They are certainly in the same marketplace as Rogan, Blue Blood, PDC etc...

Does that help?

ringring,

Hi !

Personally I like the weight of the paper denims (great for Hong Kong Summer).

I also have a pair of the heavier American Denim Rogans (the first or second original batch).Very distressed. My favourite has to be the Aihiko by Rby45rpm with natural pure indigo dye and heavy (140z) selvedge.I wear these with great caution as they are expensive and I dotn want to wash them too often for lfear of losing out on the indigo.

I too am looking into the rag & bone jeans. I have learnt that not all Japanese denim is good denim so am curious to learn more aboutt the Rag & bones. Can you shed some more light on the cut that you saw and the wash as well (in layman terms would be a great help). I am trying to get a freind to buy me a pair fromt he states as they are not yet available here.

Thanks ringring

Hey,

Thanks. Finally managed to get one of their t-shirts and utility pants from my sister in Boston. Pretty neat and sturdy - made in Canada & Kentucky - I suppose this is reflective of the prices.

Still cant get my hands on the Jeans in 28 though. Apparently they have three models RB1 , RB2 & RB8. RB1 is standard fare, RB2 is the a straighter cut with trouser style pockets and RB8 is a special limited edition.

Smooth Dupe, are the RB1's selvedge and similar to levis 501's ? where did you see them ? I heard they were a more relaxed fit. I think these are the ones with rinse and the other 2 are of a deep indigo.

Hey Haresh

By 501 do you mean cut or denim??

THe cut is that of a five pocket, semi loose fitting and a bit booted. How do the utility pants fit U? Also R&B does not make size 28 yet.

WEll the RB8 are a selvedge denim and the US price is about $240.00, made in Kntcky. THe denim is a rinsed japanese 10.5oz., which is lighter than a 501 dnm.

I saw them at "famous friends" in NY and If you go the R&B site: http://www.rag-bone.com/ you can see where the sell 'em.

Hi !

I meant 501 cut. The RB5 utility pants fit quite good , they are slightly loose but not baggy. Nice weave on the fabric, gives it a comfortable feel.

Thanks for the info. They do make 28's by the way, but very few stores sell them. They have em in Japan. I managed to get the utility pants in 28 from Rolo in SF and they had the RB1's in 28 too. I am after ther RB2's though with slant trouser style pockets - similar to the first batch of American Rogans. I am intrigued bythe lighter denim. I know even 45rpm are experimenting with a lighter denim called 2000BC or somethng like that.

Thanks again.

anyone else have any quality problems with rag and bone?

i picked up a pair, put them on, and about 120 minutes later the top button literally just fell off.

liked the quality, fit and feel, but kinda reluctant to buy another pair. i returned them and picked something else up instead.

just curious if I had a bum pair or if the brand has some quality probs.

I think they were just a bum pair. I've been really happy with R&B denim. I picked up some RB8 from last season that were one wash lightweight selvedge denim that fades into almost greenish hue. AFterwards, picked up another pair that I have not started working on yet.

I'm looking for the RB14 from this season. I hear they are raw and selvedge.

Good luck.

Are all rag & bone jeans the same weight? Or are some heavier than others? Any clue about the rb6?

Just wanted to point out that Rag & Bone have incredible customer service. I just contacted them with a problem this morning, within 30 minutes one of the designers responded telling me that they were willing to arrange a swap at the store that I bought them from.

Do you know anything about the cut of RB14?

I ordered a pair of rb6 selvage that I think are a one wash, so I can post photos when I get them.

I hate to hijack, but I dont' need another thread. I want to order the Dark Indigo RB1 from ActiveEndeavors. BUT I can only get a 32/32 (I'd prefer a 34). Is Rag&Bone sold anywhere else or does anyone do mail order (DenimBar?) that would have a 32/34?

--- Original message by scoon0224 on Mar 19, 2006 02:03 AM

32x34 seems to be a pretty rare size, its what I'm after too. The inseam on the 32x32 was short for even a 32, measured about 31 inches.

Try calling Famous Friends in NYC, I know they do mail order. They may have them.

a couple of Qs re: rag&bone jeans...

1) how much baggier, if at all, is the RB6 as compared to the GSTAR ruger straight and NUDIE slim jim?

2) what other jeans would you compare the RB1's to in terms of bagginess?

unfortunately the nearest stockist is a 5 hour flight from me, so web purchases are the go!

cheers!
