Brooklyn Industries bites

Ugh. I HATE making stray keystrokes... -__- The title was not supposed to read that way...

Anyway, we have an interesting item up for discussion. It seems like Proletariat's popular "Salesman" hoody has been bitten from?

Brooklyn Industries has a jacket with a similar concept to Proletariat's; the jacket lining has watch prints a la the Salesman.

BKI's jacket is new for Spring 2006, wheras Proletariat's hoody has been out at least by September 4, 2005 (Pro says he's had the idea for even longer).

Has BKI infringed upon Pro's design???

You decide:

Proletariat's hoodie is on the left; BK industries' jacket is on the right.

sorry, but i've seen that "concept" on jackets asfar back as the 80's in NOVELTY GAG stores.

it's only recently that the trend in streetwear has turned into expensive halloween costumes, and novelty joke/gag-wear, so its no surprise to see this from 2 separate companies (most likely not biting one another, just a dumb concept that came about at about the same time).

i wouldnt be surprised to see 2 street wear companies cry over who was the first to make a 3d pop-out tits t-shirts that reads HELLO TITTY.

anyways, neither one is original and neither one was the first, and certainly neither one is dope.

its not odd to me at all.

like i said before, its a recent trend to look like a joke-store t-shirt on purpose. so all these companies are just making whatever gag apparel they can.

look at how many "bandana" prints there are now. ive evenseen one with the "bandana" printed directly onto the neck line HAHHAHAHA.

next up:

SHADDAP BITCH in bold helvetica (fucking classic 90s)

*WB logo* - Warn-A-Brotha (when the cops come)

*dairy queen logo* - DRAMA QUEEN

*Starbucks logo* - Starfucks

i could go on forever.

why go to the halloween store for a $7 shirt when you can be cooler and go to Union and cop the same thing for $30?

i forgot to add the next hot shit is to wear pajama suits, matching top and bottoms where the trousers have the padded feet stitched in (printed to look like dunks of course) and the tops have glow in the dark voltrons and yodas and shit

ITS AN EXCITING TIME FOR STREEEET WEEEAAAARRRRSSSSSSS

YAAAAAAAAAAY

wow, thanks for the hate. first of all, I didn't see myself or B.I. accusing anyone. I think oOmegao was just comparing two similar objects and was wondering if anyone had an inside scoop. Then you got Teddy acting like he invented the internet, and after hearing his comments about the 80's and shit he is obviously old enough to have done so. So, Teddy walks around everyday in a burlap sack because everything else has been done. I have to credit Bobbyhundreds for opening my eyes to this thought, but just because you don't feel Johnny Cupcakes or myself or Gucci or whatever, doesn't mean it's wack. It's just not your taste. There's no need to be a bitch about other people's shit. It's not like we are coming over to your place of business and slapping the dick out of your mouth.

Pro had it right. I'm just curious about how designers produce similar designs. It's almost like there is some design conference that they go to (this doesn't apply to the hoodie/jacket thing posted above).

Take this for example:

aqm08a_020_1.jpgbucktown_almond_large.jpg

That is a BKI jacket and oki-ni jacket (right and left respectively). First of all, I always use BKI as an example beause I like their stuff. Anyway, both have that asymmetrical pocket flap thing. Many other designers have used the same concept as of late. I'm not hip to whatever spurs fashion trends so I find it odd, that's all.

BTW: Perhaps this thread belongs in supertrash?

Proletariat - Don't sweat the hate, just remember it when people suddenly like your stuff....after someone tells them it's OK to like it. Like I said in the hundreds thread.....anyone trying to do this crazy business has my respect.....regardless of taste, style, or content. I think Bobby said it well....."just trying to make a living".

It takes a fair amount of balls to put your shit out for critique. Remember - Those that can....do, those that can't....critique. I was in Boston last week but didn't have time to swing by your shop. Next time I'm in town I'll stop by.

Jay and Pro..I dig both of your products so this doesn't have much to do with you, but it think that "those that can....do, those that can't....critique" is a cop out. There are plenty of people who can and do but produce shit... that is just all a matter of opinion anyways though.

Legally, the expression of an idea is copyrightable, but not the actual idea itself. The line between expression and idea is pretty hard to distinguish though.

Yeah...you're probably right. I guess what I was saying is that anyone that sticks with it, and keeps producing stuff....even in the face of rabid hate.....gets my respect. Hell, when I first started posting shit here I was flamed off the face of the planet. Some of the crtiques were right on the money......others were just guys with nothing better to do than shit on everything that is posted. I would agree that someone that throws together a couple shirts and declares his shit to be "dope" while announcing his intention to take over the fashion world.....is a bit tiresome.

Maybe I should have said...."Those that can....do, Those that don't....critique, and those that can't critique....hate".

It might just be a coincidence that they both have the same design. They both could have thought of the same concept without seeing each others work.

You got to keep in mind that most companies work 6-12 months in advance so that they would have production ready for shipping. If a person is designing right now, it should be Spring 07 that they are working on. The lead time for some streetwear brands would be different but if your dealing with cut and sew you'll work a year in advance.

Also with the same trend books that people use a lot of similar designs do surface from different companies.
