You should be able to find a very good cam for $500.

If you're looking for a more portable camera I would suggest the Canon SD line as they still take great pics but with fewer manual features.

The Canon S Line has more manual features and has more zoom, but isn't as cool to take around.

Check your local best buy, pretty much every camera there except for professional quality ones are within your range.
