Shorts #1

Cutting-edge digital techniques intertwine with narratives drawing on radically divergent sources in this eclectic and visually groundbreaking group of short films. Highlights include the timely insights on the roots of terrorism and perceptions of cultural outsiders in Flesh and 11:59, and director Jared Hess' (Napolean Dynamite) short commentary of the competitive spirit of Middle America in Winner Take Steve.

Thu 17 Nov 9pm

Space Rock Party

Resfest's opening night party will transport you through time and space into a 'space-rock' audio/visual jam. Featuring Melbourne's favourite instruments, This is your Captain Speaking, joining forces with Übernüdl (member of B(if)tek and Dark Network), and Australia's ambient electronic pioneers Essendon Airport, revellers will be treated to visions of classic electronic tracks by Tangerine Dream, Neu! and Brian Eno, as well as the seminal sounds of Essendon Airport playing tracks from David Chesworth's classic album '50 Synthesiser Greats'. Live versions of these iconic electronic tracks will make this one party not to be missed by the curious and the converted!

Fri 18 Nov 6pm, Mon 21 Nov 6.30pm

By Design

Resfest's annual survey of the latest innovations in the world of motion graphics and broadcast design returns with a decidedly human touch. Works in the program take their inspiration from sources as diverse as the writings of Kafka and Yeats, Star Wars action figures and the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle. The program includes the latest from Designers Republic, Nakd and Zeitguised, as well as pieces from many promising newcomers.

Fri 18 Nov 8pm, Sat 19 Nov 8.30pm

Cinema Electronica

Twin trends of DIY innovation and handcrafted animation permeate this year's Cinema Electronica program. Electronic mainstays the Chemical Brothers deliver a high-energy krump session in Galvanize and nightmarish robotic hallucinations in Believe, whilst Basement Jaxx take the Queen out for a debauched night on the town in U Don't Know Me. Animated styles ranging from felt stop-motion to CG to Yellow Submarine-inspired psychedelia emerge in videos for Coldcut, Jori Hulkonnen and Quasimoto, whilst clips like Jaron Albertin's 7 Minutes for Circlesquare challenge the viewer to discover the significance of a single shattered moment.

Sat 19 Nov 2pm, Sun 20 Nov 8.30pm

Shorts #2

Themes of isolation, control and the loss of identity in an increasingly urbanised and technologically-mediated world characterise the films in the second shorts program. Filmmakers from four continents use digital animation, documentary technique and pithy comedy to address cultural power struggles and individual loneliness across the planet with messages about self-awareness and self-confidence emerging from these extraordinary works.

Triple Threat

For young filmmakers looking for an opening, the competitive worlds of music video and TV commercial production have become one of the tried and tested portals into professional filmmaking. After scouring the globe for talented, innovative and daring directors changing the face of short form content, Resfest has chosen three filmmakers of exceptional merit. America's wild-haired wunderkind Jonnie Ross is a one-man army, whose complex, fluid and entertaining shorts and videos each spend months in incubation. Japan's Nagi Noda is rapidly gaining a reputation as one of the world's most intriguing visual creators with her impossible shorts, intricate music videos and strikingly avant-garde commercials. And France's François Vogel, a Resfest alum, has achieved everyday exposure with his campaign
