In Hayes Valley, check out Azalea, Huf, Nida, Gimme Shoes.

In the Haight, Villains & Villains Vault.

South of Market, Rolo, they have two stores on Howard St. and one on Market

abfits http://www.abfits.com/ has two stores on Grant, one in Union Square and one in North Beach.

American Rag on Van Ness

Don't know offhand of any sales, almost all of those stores have sales from time to time, one of the Rolos is stuff they are trying to get rid of and has markdowns.

Depending on what you're looking for, Loehmann's has some discounted designer stuff.

Might be able to think of more if you could tell us what sorts of things you are looking for.

Check out SMAK too, it's a shop with only swedish brands, they have a lot of Filippa K which is quite similar to APC and Agnes B. MAC is also a good store, though quite pricey. Both are on the SF shopping lists here at superfuture.

Oh, and you dont really want to walk to these stores from union square, I did and it wasn't a very pleasant experience :P

For sneakers, there is also a Huf on Sutter St., just a few blocks west of Union Sq.

Union Square has all the usual suspects, Urban Outfitters, Saks, Nordstroms, Macys, Neiman Marcus, etc. if you are pressed for time and don't want to hit all the neighborhoods. I am not an expert on buttondowns, but there is a Thomas Pink, I've heard their quality is not what it used to be. There are also Diesel, Puma and G-Star stores if any of that is of interest.

I think you should take the short cab ride to Hayes Valley, there are a lot of good boutiques in a short stretch there.
