Levi's STF: how much can they shrink?

ok, im helping a friend out:

he purchased 501 STF's 38 x 36. he usually wears 36 x 30.

can he shrink them down to a decent size? apparently they're huge, but hopes to get massive shrinkage. any suggestions?

those will shrink down to something like 36X32, depending on how they're washed, though I wouldn't wanna machine wash them because that makes them lose a lot of color.

turn them inside out and let them lie in cold water in a bath tub for a couple of hours.

what about wearing them afterwards and letting them dry while wet, is that necessary?

THey won't shrink that much unless you wash them. I bought my stfs true to size, then soaked them inside out for 30 min, then let them dry on me, and they fit perfect.

definitely true. i tried buying my first pair of stfs based on the fit guide on the back of the jeans (i.e. two sizes up in waist, four in length) and tried soaking them (to avoid losing color) and they didn't come anywhere near shrinking that much. i think they expect people to machine wash them.

Ever since then i've bought them true to size and worn them as you would any dry denim (very frequently when still dry for about three-four months to get good wear) and then take a bath in them and wear till dry; they'll fit perfect. If anything buy a size or two bigger in LENGTH only. true to size in waist will be fine as even if they shrink a bit in this method, Levi's standard line is typically over sized to begin with...

when you say you let them dry on you do you mean directing taking them out of the soak and sitting down to dry? that sounds so uncomfortable. or do you wait until they're half dry and then wear them?

so if they shrink more when you wash vs. soaking, does that mean you soak first, then machine-wash? or is it one or the other...

...and it is always hang dry? what if you machine-dry, will that shrink even more?

I didn't put them straight on when I took them out, I rung em out with my hands. The I laid em flat and blowdried em a little, to where they wouldn't drip all over my carpet. Then I put em on when damp, and let them dry on me. I used blowdryer too, Idk if that's a bad thing or not though. lol

Thought I would add: I noticed that the STFs they sell by my house are a size bigger in the waist than the tag says. So if you size up like the guide says you end up trying to shrink something that's way too big to begin with. Maybe that's the reason STFs "don't shrink."

I'm gonna get some too, but I'm bringing some measuring tape along!

i bought a 35 and i normally wear a 33

they shrink pretty good. Get 2 to 3 sizes bigger in length and waste. If you want them to shrink to fit, what I did was wear them in the bath tub in warm water for 10 mins, and then sat in them till they dried. Pretty drastic, but wanted to make sure the fit was how I liked it
