sewing machines for denim...

question for you denim experts ... outta curiousity .. which sewing machines are usually used / preferred for sewing & stitching denim together? or does it make any difference?

industiral ones. i use an old singer that was just chillin at my friends dads old factory.

Good stuff adsurgo, singer makes a good machine huh. I just got a cover seamer the other day, haven't had a chance to have a blast on it yet.

You can make Jeans with a plain sewer and an overlocker, but there are also a massive variety of machines you can use, or factories can use to make em. Cover seamers for belt loops, chainstitchers, bar tack machines, walking foot machines for super heavy denim, flat felled seam attachments. I think there is also fully automated patch pocket machines.....I would like to see one of those going. There are probably more fully automated machines.

a bit off topic, but there's a textile loom for sale in my area. if i had more time, i'd love to get into this hobby. does anybody here make their own selvage denim? maybe one day when i'm an old geezer with all the time in the world...

Hey Dn'W, that sounds pretty cool. How much is it, just out of interest? Have you seen the photos on the Yen website I think it is, Japanese co. anyway.......I could be wrong, anyway there were pic's of the guys hand weaving denim for those super expensive Jeans, and all natural indigo etc. It has been covered on here before, looks really time consuming. It would be a great old guy hobbie huh, make 20 pairs of Jeans a year, haha, and sell them for exorbitant prices

it isn't as complicated as the machine in yen's site, but rather it looks like something Gandhi would've used himself.

i'm really tempted...but law school is taking 105% of my time right now...

My mother is a seamstress and does tailoring in uptown manhattan. We have two singer machines in the basement and one at her work. One of the machines looks funny and I'm not sure if that is a sewing machine though. I get free alterations and dry cleaning.

If you're going to sew denim you definitely need an industrial machine.

A home single needle machine or overlock is just going to break needles...

I sew a lot my own clothes, but when it comes to altering my denim...

it's straight to the tailor.

You can get some pretty good quality old school home sewers, like 70's metal ones. The new ones are shit and fall apart, made of mainly plastic. Use super sharp denim needles, hand roll over the thicker sections.....sweet as
