i have a cheaper pair of the 501 stf. i bought them to see how theyd wear in time. after wearing them like 3 times i felt too weird with them being a little big so i washed them in warm water the other day and they came out smaller and darker (im assuming because the fabric is now closer together) but how is this going to affect the wear process? should i keep wearing them and see if in time they wear or should i just start over with a tighter size? also, how exactly does the starching thing work?

Just wear them. The washing won't have effected the wear process too much. If they are still dark now, then it's still possible to get high contrast fades.

Starching works by making jeans stiffer - so the creases are held longer and sharper. This increases the likelyhood of the abrasion on the ridges of each crease, eventually creating wear marks.
