Do I still have to pay customs if I return an item?

I need to return or exchange a jacket to luisviaroma (I'm in the US); I'm expecting a hefty customs fee from FedEx - will that be cancelled if I return the package? And will I have to pay for Italian customs on their end when they receive my return?

well if you haven't recieved the package yet, you can denine it and have it returned to the sender and there shouldn't be any fees associated with it.

Already got it. Didnt fit, so thats why I need to return it.

Well, yes, you accepted the package. Accepting package = customs fees.

nope, no way to contest the fees. LVR are probably legally equivalent to buying off you , so you can't get a US customs refund, and you might have to pay IT customs yeah.

IANAL obviously, but i don't see any avenue available to you. (though i am a UK law student,)

I sent a package to someone in Italy about a month ago, but they haven't received it yet.

I suspect it's held up in customs, but that still seems like an inordinate amount of time.

Has anyone else encountered similar waiting periods when shipping to Italy?

don't know about fedex, but in canada you can get customs refunds, you just need to fill in forms and send them your receipt/shipping slips/etc to prove you mailed it back.

That makes sense coming from Canada. Unfortunately Italian government services aren't exactly known for being a well oiled machine.

I highly doubt that you'll be able to straighten the situation out before your return window with Luisaviaroma closes. It sort of looks like you're screwed.

You definitely don't have to pay Italian customs as long as its marked as a return, and you should be able to get a US customs refund as well. Here in Norway the customs office just need the receipt of the return package and a copy of the bank statement (or similar) that shows they accepted the return.
