I take it back. I take it all back. fucking quality.

You were watching this in a place with interweb access? Boo to that.

Guess we got lucky this time around... New Zealand got the sharp end of Michelak's 50/50 brilliance, and France got shot in the foot by him misfiring for half an hour the second time around.

God that was a comatose waste of 80 minutes. Saffas deserved to win the tournament overall but neither side reached the standards they set earlier in the tournament. Was pretty much summed up by the fact the 9 points down with 10 minutes to go England were still aimlessly kicking high balls in the hope of forcing mistakes that never came.

At least now after 4 years of total mismanagement we can finally say goodbye to Dad's Army and build a functioning backline once more.

hahah. well, ever since the 1999 final where jannie de beer kicked the boers to victory with 5 (or was it 6) drop goals, and jonny wilkinson's appearance after that, RWC finals have been putting the points up on the board.... in order to win, rather than to conventionally score tries.

evolution of the game i suppose. after all, who doesn't want to win? better to have a little less flair, and secure a victory, for most.

however, i think, its better to be a flamboyant loser, than a run of the mill type winner.

Eh? That was the quarter-final, Australia put the Saffas out in the semi and went on to win the tournament with a convincing win over France.

I'd say that style of negative rugby has existed for a lot longer than that... the Saffas were an incredibly negative side throughout the 90s, and England excelled in the tight, forward-based game (and stuffed it in the 91 final by trying to play an open game for no apparent reason). That style has't always worked, but the open-play style of NZ and France has been even less effective. Every RWC winning, with the blip that was the Saffas in 1995 (*cough*convenient food poisoning*cough*) have been balanced teams with both a strong pack and a good backline...
