has anyone else noticed the huge influx of annoying, seemingly middle-school aged, illiterate, newly registered posters? It seems like every new thread in superdenim especially is some lame question easily answered by a search, by someone who has apparently just stumbled onto the site from a link on a sneaker forum and decided that denim is their next big thing. Is this some big joke? what is causing this migration to SF that threatens to destroy it all?

your impression is quite correct, watchman. there are a lot more users joining recently than usual. if you look at the number of users who joined from august 1 - 13 in 2007 vs. previous years, there is clearly a big jump this year (Fig. 1). note that after 2004, there was a big increase in 2005, then joins stabilized somewhat in 2006, then another explosion this year (about double).

the data do not explain the reason for these 'jumps' in popularity, but obviously, with more noobs there will be more noobish posts. it's the price of success, i suppose.
