yes,

takashi murakami coined the term to describe manga type animation...since , the idea has spread into other media : video games, internet and even architecture...

Wow, this thread went nowhere. Anyhow, SUPERFLAT is nothing more than a restatement of American postmodernism in a Japanese voice a generation after the fact. AND I LIKE MURAKAMI!

It's an interesting Japanese (well, I guess it's more like Murakami & Co.) take on the Dada/Pop idea of the high/low play in art, a sort of obsession with iconography and commercialism from what reading I've done about it. Not really my thing, though.
