Digital SLR: Pentax or Canon EOS Rebel XT?

A friend of mine works for Canon and has offered to get me the Canon EOS Rebel XT for $450. Comes with the standard lens kit. The problem is that this thing is refurbished and for about the same price I can get a brand new Pentax for about the same.

Anyone with experience with either please weigh in.

Thanks in advance.

to be honest I've never used a Pentax so couldn't really compare them, but the Canon sounds like a good offer IMO, nothing wrong with a refurbished one especially if its done at Canon.

but which Pentax are you referring to? as far as I know the K10 runs at around 8-900

I was thinking k100D. I few stores around here allow the manipulation of coupons to get a better than normal price. Plus there is a $50-150 rebate that ends in late July. I heard a lot of good things about Pentax, or I would have jumped on the Canon.

I have a refurbished 350D. It looked brand new when I first got it as did the kit lens. And i've been using it for almost a year with zero problems.
Thanks, that's what I wanted to hear. I was worried about issues surfacing after the one year mark. Yeah, $441 with tax and shipping doesn't sound too bad. Thanks guys.

i've got myself a pentax k10D a couple of weeks ago (my first dslr) and i must say i really really really like it. the body is just so much nicer to hold that alone was a reason to go with it. i think the pentax interface does work pretty nice, just have to get used to it a little. imo the k100d would be a good choice

The canon and the pentax aren't really comparable, a Canon will be a much better performing camera and has much better lense options when you go down that path.

The only comparison you should be doing is Canon to Nikon, they are the market leaders in the dSLR business at the moment.

I made the rounds during lunch yesterday and found that the Pentax felt really sturdy compared to the Canon, however most of the people at the stores I visited recommended the Canon. Since I am a novice they told me that the Canon is pretty much idiot proof. Thanks for all the opinions. I'll probably but some Supreme stuff on sale in the coming weeks to get the camera.
