just heard today about a cobbler on st. mark's near 3rd that is supposed to be amazing. has all the old stitch down machines so he can repair all those great vintage boots and shoes you have sitting around. sorry can't remember his name or the exact location but i guess he has a stuffed animal perched infront of his shoppe maybe that helps.

Thanks for all the tips. For what it's worth, I don't actually have any immediate shoe repair needs, rather I just acquired a pair of second hand poell lace ups, after significant saving and searching, and wanted to talk to someone knowledgeable about how to best care for them in order to get the most life I can out of the things. I fucking love these shoes and want them to last as long as possible. Thanks again.

best thing you can do is to let them rest for a day after wearing them, it's amazing what a difference this makes in the long-term life of the shoe. also it's a good idea to replace the heel outsole before the wear starts biting into the leather strips that form the heel. if you walk hard on this part taps may be a good idea. oh and clean them when they're dirty, if you're not wearing them regularly store them in their box so they don't get dusty. i personally don't use shoe trees btw

if you're talking about repair, jim's shoe repair in midtown are really good. i've never had anything that required bigtime fixing but they've done excellent work for me and a lot of the madison ave boutiques use them. note - they are closed on weekends for part of the summer.

+1 This is the only place I have been to so far, but they always do a great job. Next time I need a cobbler though I'm going to Miz's guy Minas. I asked GregNYC earlier where I should go to get some Vibram soles put on my boots, and he said I should check out the below shop...
