Ray Petri and Buffalo Style

Recommended Posts

this dude was totally amazing. it might just be the fashion neophyte in me, and my lack of appreciation for our immediately preceding style forebearers, but his, and his followers', stuff looks so fresh to me. i might also be experiencing borrowed nostalgia for the unremembered late 80s, early 90s.

i dunno...i really like the whole sports gear + formal wear aesthetic (mostly because i've taken to wearing gym shorts and leather laceups lately) and he/buffalo did it (body glove shirt notwithstanding) really really well. i mean, i wouldn't go so far as wearing a wrestling singlet under a broad-shouldered armani blazer or anything, but there are aspects to it that really appeal to me.

OMC Roundup™

123. i recently picked up the book Excess: Fashion and the Underground in the 80s, released by Pitti Imagine in 05/06? It dedicates a chapter or so to Buffalo style and

Petri and the scene.

12. the powerHouse book on Petri is really, really well done. i need to pick it up, i've only flipped through it.

12. i'm still trying to figure in where Malcon Mclaren and "Buffalo Gals" fit in with

Petri... details about the connection, if any, escape me. i remember reading a piece about Mclaren where he talks about being involved with the Buffalo movement.

1. i agree wholeheartedly with you.

i was going to ask if anyone if anyone had seen the book in person. now that you recommended it, i'll actually consider picking it up. or maybe i'll go to the library first.

i do suppose then, that mclaren's claims were limited solely to buffalo inspired music and not so much the fashion side, although from his boasts it seemed like he had a heavier hand. i've been desperate to find a less tenuous connection between mclaren and petri, just because i have nothing better to do that reconstruct cultural history for my own edification.

Petri was amazing. first person to use non-white models extensively in their work.

he worked on the fly, mostly, literally smashing together high and low right in front of him, moments before a photo was snapped.
