i think a good analogy would be, a woman walking through the worst part of harlem while sporting a mink coat, and lots of jewels, and alone, at 4:30 saturday morning. of course, in an ideal utopian society, she should be able to do this if she so chooses. but in our actual real world society, is she smart to do this? it's not that society finds her behavior 'unacceptable,' it's stupid because it increases risk to herself. period.

OMC, i had a japanese friend who "had to go to harlem" to meet somebody. since i lived in harlem for most of my time in new york, he asked me if he should dress "hip-hop" so as to not get mugged. i told him dressing fake "hip-hop" style was a guarantee that he would be seen as a sucka and even i would think about robbing his ass.

he was a rich kid, so i told him to put on his nicest gucci suit, his illest sunglasses and jewels.

when he came back, he told me that no one fucked with him. also, a couple people cautiously and respectfully approached him and asked him if he was "a yakooza".
