documentary making 101

my father in law has recently retired from working as a wildlife documentary producer for KBS in korea.

now he wants to start up his own production company specialising in wildlife (birds, insects and flowers), but he feels the level of technical expertise in shooting documentaries, especially in korea, is still at a relatively primative level, compared to the bbc, national geographic, discovery channel, etc..

so hes given me the task of compilling a library of sorts, of knowledge that has been built up.

the only thing i can think of is dvd box sets of david attenbourough series, with a "making the series" featurette being the most important thing.

another thought was to email someone working in brunel university, where ive seen them advertising a Masters in documentary making, and asking for their reading list.

where should i start looking?

...www.mediarights.org may be able to help you if you register, they can organise workshops, help with reserch, etc, could be only US based though but I always thought Ch4 had something similar with http://www.channel4.com/4talent/ ...

http://www.der.org/resources/ has a complete list of books and resources for documentary makers...Have a good search on google, you'll turn up whatever you need...

...Popped into the studio next to mine(I'm a designer), they run a film festival and picked the cute one's brains, thats what she came up with off the top of her head, I'll see who's in tomorrow and see if they've any more resources for ya...
