reinforcing midsoles on vintage sneakers?

Recommended Posts

I have a pretty extensive collection of vintage sneakers, most of which have never been worn and all of which I would very much like to wear. As many of you may know, the problem with older sneakers is that the midsoles deteriorate over time due to oxidation and as soon as any weight is placed on them they crumble; hence the inability to wear them. I'm wondering if any of you have advice on how to "restore" the polyurethane midsoles of these sneakers. re-soling is not really an option, as the structure of the midsoles is often fairly elaborate and would probably require some unique molds to duplicate. I have heard of attempts at using caulk and things of that sort to hold them together, but I have also heard the midsoles eventually suffer the same fate after that kind of reinforcement. I refuse to believe that this is a problem without a solution. help.
