I'm in the market for some new ties for my wedding wear/ formal parties lol. Skinny ties are pretty cool but I have no idea where to start, any pointers?

It really depends on the wedding. If it is an evening wedding, then a tuxedo is prescribed. However, if it's a day wedding, then the formal equivalent would be an outfit known as a Stroller. Otherwise, a suit would also work.

Formal parties, of course, are usually black-tie.

True, but the Stroller or morning coat is a rare sight. A regular tux for a day wedding will suffice for most nowadays.
