syracuse or uconn?

inspired by apu's post. i decided not to put this in the small questions thread cuz it's not related to denim or shopping. i'm transferring for 2nd year, undergrad. studying marketing management. syr has a reputable business school. uconn is known but not as well. campus: both even out, uconn is more lush/modern feeling, but syr has beautiful architecture and an antique (in a good way) feeling. my brain is telling me not to think about the costs, but i can't get it off my mind. i estimate i'll graduate w/ $60k debt if i go to syr and $40k if i go to uconn. however, i am justifying this difference by thinking that i will have more opportunities (perhaps a larger salary?) by attending syracuse.

i am leaning towards syracuse and i have a few more days to think about it. all in the middle of midterms. shit.

I live in connecticut. Uconn, which I'm sure you know if you've already visited, is in the middle of farm country... lacking a bit in the culture department. however, it's gotten a lot of attention from basketball, which means more competition, more notoriety, blah blah blah

I know next to nothing about US schools, as I am in the great white north, but for whats its worth, I've "heard" of Uconn and not really of syracuse.

no offense, but i think as someone who lives in a country that's home to only three colleges -- u of t, mcgill and pierre trudeau university or something stupid like that -- it's probably hard for you guys to keep track of just the few schools that make up the big east, let alone all the universities in this country that are real universities and not fake canadian universities.

i went to syracuse for undergrad. i fully support the school, but the city leaves much to be desired. that said, so does the area around UCONN and syracuse is a better school by far. not only is the school of management highly reputable, but you will have access to taking classes in many other great programs in the school (i.e. Maxwell Public Policy, Newhouse Communications, the geography program is top notch, etc.). avoid choosing by "how pretty the campus is", even though syracuse has a beautiful campus, you won't notice this when it's five below w/ a foot and a half of snow in january.

don't worry so much about the money, if you have to take loans for school, we've all been there, and to be honest, it's by far the cheapest money you'll ever borrow.

go to syracuse.

Tough choices. UConn's business school receives a lot of attention and money, and is well funded and well connected with a lot of large companies that have offices in CT. Quite a few of my close friends, after graduating from the business school, have received jobs from top corporations right after graduation. The downside to UConn is that it is in one of the most rural parts of CT. You can take the occassional trip to NYC or Boston, but forget about having a campus town or interesting cultural experience. UConn's also the top ranked public university in New England, another note to consider. Syracuse seems to be just as good or better, but I've had a few friends who've gone there and decided to transfer out. Same could be said of UConn though.

I don't think you'll have a larger salary depending on what school you'll go to. That more depends on your own grades and achievements in college. I would visit both schools and determine which one suits YOU best. After all, you're going to be spending another 2-3 years there, you might as well enjoy the college you're paying for.

By the way, I'm in my last semester here at UConn. Personally, I think I've gotten a good education from here, but the lack of surrounding amenities is leaves a lot to be desired. PM me if you have any other questions.

yeah, man. i used to date a professor at syracuse. i hated visiting her.

there is nothing in the area. absolutely nothing. but you will spend most of your time drinking anyways, i suppose.

syracuse is a better school, i think, with a better name.

but here's the big thing:

hartford, CT is MUCH closer to areas of civilization than syracuse. you're a few hours away from NYC, Providence and Boston. in fact, some people commute from hartford to new york everyday. also, you are close to skiing in new hampshire if you're into that sort of thing.

so for me, u conn.

miz, it's misleading, even though syracuse seems more remote, you are only a 3.5 hour drive from NYC and a 2.5-3 hour drive to Toronto (better than providence or boston IMO). i had several professors that lived in NYC and commuted for three days at a time to teach. both areas suck, but that's not why you are there.

syracuse is a much better school across the board, not close really.
