It's funny though. Electro is still so new that it's like these artists have to call themselves house/electro just so people understand it means (dance) music.

Are you fucking kidding me? Electro has been around since the 80's. Shove a fucking sock in your e-mouth.

DURRRRRR Planet Rock?!

They're not grouping their music in the house genre because it says "hey this is dance music", they're grouping their music in the house genre because it has fragments of house music innit- such as 4 on the floor beats and (sometimes) diva vocals.

At the core electro is cheap 808 hiphop beats and (now considered) cheesy synths... it's not about fat ass distorted bass lines or disgusting, sarcastic, bratty lyrics. At least it wasn't at the start.

It's now looked as regresssive, when Afrika Bambaataa & The Soulsonic Force first came up with "electro" is was supposed to be super progessive and "futuristic"- clashing with a little band called Kraftwerk.

as far as rock your ass off music i have to give it up to death from above 1979 "you're a woman, i'm a machine". universally loved by cool kids everywhere (it helps that they broke up already) and the best live band in forever. i will still be listening to this in ten years.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z4e3CXzAltE&mode=related&search=

if you like punk and the blues check out black keys "thickfreakness"

if you like some creativity in your rock i would give deerhoof a listen. all their albums are great but i think i like "milk man" and "runner's four" the best.

and if you just want to your eardrums to bleed check out blood brothers and lightning bolt. lightning bolt might be an aquired taste for some but i cant reccomend them highly enough. "ride the skies" is a good place to start but its best to see them live to get whats going on. they rock harder than anyone, without any lyrics or

live

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X5e3WHdvsms&mode=related&search=

probably their most accessable "track"

also i am the only one who liked the test icicles???

maybe i should have started a new thread, but how is the stooges' "the weirdness?"

i am afraid to get it.

its could be alot worse. better than most of what passes for raw rock and roll these days. its still the stooges. not iggy pop, not iggy and the stooges but the stooges of the first two albums. iggy is singing like he still doesnt know how, ron's guitar work is great (but no wankery) and the lyrics are what you'd expect. also props to albini for the production. it doesnt have the overproduced sheen of iggy's latest solo stuff and it its raw enough without trying too hard. definately doesnt reinvent the wheel but if you like the first 2 albums you will probably dig it.

still its no "fun house" and i was kinda dissapointed the first track wasn't called "2007" to complete the circle.

...says the guy who's started the following threads:

New Romanticism Revival

classic ibiza saved my life

Eurotrash Eurodance/trance

Cassette Playa

Trash Fashion

oh shit -- i forgot how unironic and legitmately important this shit is.

quit insulting the movement man. classic ibiza is the shit. eurotrash eurodance is some of the most enjoyable music in the world. newro makes me happy. cassette playa is awesome; i'm definitely going to cop. trash fashion is entertaining. it's a rayyyv dayyyyv. i joke sometimes like everyone else, but those threads are fairly serious.

@cultpop: some of my friends liked test icles. also i think CSS's "let's make love and listen to death from above" is better than anything dfa1979 made.

Dear KEAGAN,

thank you for restoring my faith in humanity.

not that this really, really matters but.

lately, silly post-hipster dance-music loving snot-nosed punks have been annoying me

talking about

"this new electro genre"

when electro emerged not soon after hip-hop did

in

my motherfucking home town

and we've been rocking the party ever since.

so, thank you. a million times over.

EDIT: the horrors are a black wave of hell rocking your ass into oblivion.

that is all.

You must have not seen him live at Coachella 06.

i haven't seen him since 2004. saw him open for joanna newsom at as220 in providence. I was 10 feet away from him and he sucked. I guess if it takes a huge stage with hundreds of thousands of people to play to, i guess it's considered good then.

rep+ for mentioning a Snowden song

fyi: that remix came out in the summer of 2006

If any of you like the cure, joy division, any shoegaze, u2, or just good fucking music in general... check out Snowden.

they dropped a remix album a few months ago, been on tour with french-noisepop-rock group Malajube (another great band) most of this year...

their rereleasing their remix album in itunes here soon hopefully...not to mention there bass player is incredibly hot.

some of snowden's best:

http://snowden.info/anti_anti/02%20Anti-Anti.mp3

http://snowden.info/anti_anti/05%20Black%20Eyes.mp3 <- original version

http://snowden.info/anti_anti/07%20Counterfeit%20Rules.mp3

i rotate music like anything, so the fact that their cd has stayed in consistent rotation since i heard it last september is really saying something.

i randomly saw snowden last month when my buddy's band opened for them, that girl is hot.

i'm pretty sure electro predated hip hop. bambaataa was like 79 or 80 or some shit, right?

anyway keagan, i'm not joking about "copping." i really do want cassette playa. my main concern is affording it at seven's rape prices. still, i need me some cassette playa.

I suppose.

When Planet Rock came out everyone knew it was "electro". Right?

I look at it as the first electro record, same with Rappers Delight (single). Eathier way electro came a few years after the hiphop sound was cemented in everyones brain, I believe.

Band of Horses are one of my favourite, pretty straightforward rock.

A ton of others, but the reason I bring them up is because I want to go see them at Lee's Palace in Toronto on the 11th but I have no one to go with ...

Anyone want to come?

detroit techno is such a long subject.

i'm likin extremely bad tv movies...got a good sound goin on.

not really

Atkins and May start hanging out.

May releases strings of life.

Richie Hawtin starts hanging out with black guys from detroit.

Skinny white guys latch on to richie.

Richie is popular, and has a lot of friends.

richie starts minus, signs all of his friends.

Everyone moves to berlin.

End.

Whilest talking about Electro, or the advent of electronic music, how could you guys forget to mention the whole british techno scene? Especially Skam, Ninja Tune and, of course, Warp records.

I honestly believe that 50% of the most straight-forward music of the early 90's is made and released in England.

For example, take Autechre's Anti EP, it was released in 1994 and it still sounds more thrilling than any random techno release in the 00's. Fuck, it even sounds like it's created in 2010.

Not to mention Aphex twin's Selected Ambient Works (85-92/ ii) and loads of others...

i read this post like 3x trying to figure out what you're talking about. we were focusing on how people bunch too many types of music under the "electro" name.
