So I had an argument with a friend, and there really isn't any way to "research" this to come up with an definitive answer. I figured the opinions of Supergay shoppers would be the best place to start.

As a whole, which would you say is a more "upscale" department store:

Nordstrom, or Bloomingdale's ?

I wouldnt call Bloomingdales upscale, it's a slightly less ghetto Macy's

When you walk into a Bloomingdales, it's the same ghetto riff raff who work at Macy's ignoring the huge messy piles of clothing, snapping gum and talking about "gitting that paper."

Upscale to me, my opinion only would be Barney's, Bergdoff Goodman, Saks Fifth Ave, and Neimann Marcus, where you're basically given handjobs from the time you walk in.

it really depends where you live. the bloomingdales in SF seems to be insane. Nordstroms seems to fucking suck everywhere though

This is true, the bloomingdales in Soho is definately better well for women's wear anyway than say NJ or LI. But it still sucks.

Well, the argument wasn't which is the most prestigious of all department stores, because obviously Neiman Marcus, Saks, etc. are clearly above the rest.

I also took into consideration that in bigger cities, the department stores will be closer to each other (for example, Macy's in NYC has big name brands that it wouldn't anywhere else in the country)........however, we are looking at them "as a whole"

It was difficult enough using the 'perfect' adjectives, but I think the point comes across well enough. Without reading too far into it, what do you think of as the more "esteemed" of the two.

I'd go with Bloomingdale's, just because of what Poly said. Nordstroms is horrible for casual (what I wear mostly) everywhere I've been, and the Bloomingdale's in San Francisco was relatively amazing for casual and dressy as well. Also, here in So. Cal, Bloomingdale's is considered one-step-up the chain among most. Bloomingdale's here is the special occasion / one nice pair of jeans shopping, where as Nordstrom's is more like, "Oh, I lost my jacket, I'll swing by Nordstrom's and see what they have on sale."

Still, Nordstrom's customer service is amazing.
