Japan's Economy, Trade and Industry Ministry is to draw up a support strategy to strengthen the global competitiveness of its fashion industry.

A subcommittee of the Industrial Structure Council, an advisory panel to the ministry, will begin studying measures on February 9 and plans to compile a report by the end of May, reported The Yomiuri Shimbun.

The subcommittee will consider ideas including the formation of a consultation team made up of fashion experts and designers, to discuss how to sell more Japanese textiles abroad.

It will also advise on matters such as strengthening

competitiveness, through promoting partnerships between clothing and textile manufacturers looking to penetrate foreign markets.

Increased exposure for up-and-coming brands at events such as the biannual Japan Fashion Week Tokyo will also be on the agenda. It will especially consider how to help Japanese brands make inroads into growing Asian markets, especially China and Southeast Asia.
