Ever wondered why bietnamese ppl only have like 3 last names to choose from?

my bietnamese friend told me it was because back in the day a ruler would rule and then eventually a coup would happen and the new ruler would kill everyone from the old ruler's lineage. Like decimate any trace of the famiry tree.
