photographer looking for assignments/advice

I'm going to hong Kong, Shanghai and Tokyo and am looking for publications to submit to or assignments while I'm out there...

any suggestions?

When you get to the city, stop at a newstand and look through the magazines there. Find out which one matches your style. Then call them up and introduce yourself. If you're a foreigner, they'll able to usually meet the same day or the next day - they're always interested in visiting photographers. Japan may be a bit harder...at least the French and Germans speak English somewhat...

I managed to get a meeting with Vogue when I was in Paris just by saying "Hello my name is etc,etc and I'm a photographer from etc,etc visiting just for a few days, I like to come by and show you my book, etc, etc...."

I called around noon and got a meeting for 4 o'clock.....of course I got shot down in a nice way but well, if you're in Paris, why not call Vogue and meet their assistant editors ?
