    photographer looking for assignments/advice

When you get to the city, stop at a newstand and look through the magazines there. Find out which one matches your style. Then call them up and introduce yourself. If you're a foreigner, they'll able to usually meet the same day or the next day - they're always interested in visiting photographers. Japan may be a bit harder...at least the French and Germans speak English somewhat... I managed to get a meeting with Vogue when I was in Paris just by saying "Hello my name is etc,etc and I'm a photographer from etc,etc visiting just for a few days, I like to come by and show you my book, etc, etc...." I called around noon and got a meeting for 4 o'clock.....of course I got shot down in a nice way but well, if you're in Paris, why not call Vogue and meet their assistant editors ? Good luck ! Shipping within the USA

Uhm. That's about it. If shipping stuff like DVDs, CDs or books you can use Media Rate which will cut down the cost by about a half but can take up to 21 days to get to the destination. Try usps.com, fedex.com and ups.com and punch in some figures to get some idea. usa :: los angeles :: general

Rent's a bit cheaper in the Valley but you'll have to cross over the 101 or Laurel Canyon to get into LA proper. Like mention before it really depends on what you'll be doing and where you'll be working. I currently live in K-town (Korea Town) where rent used to be cheap but they'll getting on up nowdays. A lot of folks have discovered this part of town and I'm getting architects, photographers and other more design-oriented folks in my building. For me it's a good middle ground for me. My office in downtown is either 15 minute drive to the east, Miracle Mile 10 minutes to the west, Hollywood 15 minutes up north. Silverlake's 15 minutes NE...... Expect to pay about $1,000 average for a one bedroom unless you're more in the shady parts of town. If you need more details, feel free hit me back. London in two days?

Dee, If you're into drum & bass, you should check out Fabric - in fact for drum & bass fanatics, this is the place to go - their line-ups always amazing. Bear in mind I'm from the States and the lineup at Fabric would be a line-up at a all-day festival here so I'm biased. Their site is www.fabriclondon.com. Nearest station is Farrington. And when you stumble out into the streets at 6 am, there's a spot right across the tube entrance to get some bakery goodies for jumping on. I'm also a big fan of Wagamama . It's a nicely design "casual" Asian spot with locations all over the UK, Australia, one in Amsterdam but none in States yet - curses ! The chicken's good there and dinner's pretty cheap - you can get out for about 10. Their site is www.wagamama.co.uk for locations. Anyone else ? The Working Life

I have the same problem in my field - there are X amount of photographers and X amount of companies/magazines/designers using photographers. Every year there are hundreds of new photographers on the scene - LA has two photography school pumping out newbies every semester. The problem is anybody can be a photographer from the actor who does photography on the side to the designer who does photography on the side. I can't tell you how many times I get "Oh, you're a photographer ? So what is your day job ? " .....uh..there is no ... day .... job - this is all I do... last time I had a client ask me question, I just look blankly at her and said "Huh ? What do you mean day job ? " It doesn't help that in a strange way photography is killing itself with dayrates and "copyright free" photography and just really bad contracts that newbies signed just to get their foot in the door and in the process shooting him/herself in the foot. Of course this clears the field but at the same time fees haven't changed much in 20 years if you can believe it.... sorry for my rant but a life of a photographer ain't what it's all crack up to be.... e Oh, if you want to hear more tired phrases/cliches spoken in the photography industry, click to this forum : http://www.pdngallery.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=002015 What's buggin' my ears now : Telefon Tel Aviv - Map of What is Worthless Klute - Fear of People Sidestepper - 3 am : In Beats We Trust KLF - White Room

Best movie theater in Paris ?

Nope, a beautiful disaster though.... I had a feeling about that from reading forum boards but sometimes I can't resist watching these. They never mention a good portion of this film is CGI characters that don't look very real at all - but I believe the intention was to give it more of a graphic novel/comic book feel which unfortunatley did not work in this context of film. Many situations weren't fully explain and I wish there was more backstory to let us the audience - especially those who didn't follow the books - what the deal was. e What's buggin' my ears now : Telefon Tel Aviv - Map of What is Worthless Klute - Fear of People Sidestepper - 3 am : In Beats We Trust KLF - White Room

Best movie theater in Paris ?

Yeah, I''ve heard the news on that flick but the eye candy factor is high for me......it'll probably be like Underworld. Looks great in the commerical, sucks big time on film. Gone through IMDB and read some of the reviews but hey, I figured I'm in Paris, but as well go catch it and see what the movie experience is like here. I actually found this trailer through a Tokyo blog. Also coming out is that Appleseed flick which should be out now in Japan I believe.... e What's buggin' my ears now : Telefon Tel Aviv - Map of What is Worthless Klute - Fear of People Sidestepper - 3 am : In Beats We Trust KLF - White Room

    magazines bookstores in Paris

Thanks yáll for the suggestions. I went to Brentano and check out their selections - actually found a copy of URB magazine, first time I've seen it out here in Paris. My research is simple. I'm hitting the magazines based here to introduced myself as a photographer based in LA. Of course all the big celebrities will get their big photographers but if there's a new up and coming guy/gal, I can do it. I'm also interested in fashion and so I'm digging for magazines I can't find in the US so I can get the address and go a-calling. Basically you look better if you got tearsheets from outside the US. Like Hal Hartley, you get no respect at home but overseas. I've gone to a couple today - MAX, Le Magazine Double. drop my book off at Gloss, gonna recall Jalouse tomorrow, blah. blah, blah....whomever will hire me ! And of course if I can find photography books I can't get at home or Amazon.com, even more the better ! If you're curious about my work, see www.optiknerve.com - there's a temp page up with most of the stuff that is in my book. Oh, if you think you have a suggestion of a magazine I should go see here (based upon what you see in my gallery), please, let me know ! I'll be town for a few more days pounding the pavement..... I knew I could get the info I needed here at Superfuture ! And what is the deal with the cardboard boxes by the ashtrays in the subways ? Are you supposed to throw trash in the box or the ticket stub ? Thanks for the info... I'll go check it out - anybody else have other suggestions ? Also recommendation for photography/design/arts bookstores be appreciated too ! I found a great tiny store specializing in such in Berlin called Pro-qm (www.pro-qm.com) so for those interested in such , it's a great place. There's also a nicely deisgn bar called Riva Bar slightly down the street under the rail station. I'll be writing this up on here when I get back to the States.... thank you ! e What's buggin' my ears now : Telefon Tel Aviv - Map of What is Worthless Klute - Fear of People Sidestepper - 3 am : In Beats We Trust KLF - White Room Edited by eric2019 on Apr 26, 2004 at 04:54 AM
