BC (kootenays & Nelson)

I'm heading to BC for three weeks of skiing at red mountain and will be entertaining friends. given how far removed from civilization we'll be, the closest town is Nelson. I'll be there over new years and whatnot but was wondering if there is anything anyone semi-local to the area might recommend to do... I'll certainly be taking advantage of the abundant herb in nelson, but beyond getting high, my ideas are somewhat limited...

As far as I know, Red Mountain is really nice.... but Nelson is really hurt... I was there a while ago and went to Fluid, which was pretty decent, but there wasn't much happening otherwise. I've heard that both Kelowna and Penticton have good New Years partys, but they're both like 5 hours away. Could make for a decent mini-road trip?

Otherwise, it's unfortunate that you're not in Nelson for the summer, because they have a crazy outdoor music festival called Shambala...It's supposed to be a festival at least, but it becomes much more like a crazy pot fuelled outdoor orgy to electronica after the first night...
