You really don't need all that. Most guys I know who do 20 mile rides around the city don't carry anything but a U-lock.

im that guy who knows that if something bad will happen it will happen to me, so i like to be prepared. The one day i went on a ride i went a good 5 miles and got my tire cut by some glass, threw the kelviar didnt have anything but a ipod, fone, wallet, had to walk 5 miles uphill.

Trying to convert my bike into a fixie. Do you guys recommend that I do it myself or that I pay a shop to do it for me? I'm a newb when it comes to this....some people are telling me that it's too hard for a beginner while others are saying that it's a good project...

i say do it yourself you get youll feel alot better when your done with it. Nothing worst then to convert a bike on to a hipster bike, but then say that your lbs did it for you.

also i think they would charge an arm and a leg

I am looking into getting a messenger bag, a back pack is getting to akward and isn't to efficient. I was wanting to get something that would work well biking and at school, therefore laptop friendly. I have been looking at Chrome, Timbuk2 and Pac bags. Chrome seem good just not sure on sizing and how well they would work with a laptop. Timbuk2 have the laptop messenge which looks good, but for some reason the bags look like the have too many extra straps just my opinion. The Pac bags look really tough, but not sure how accomadating for laptops, as well the price tag is alot higher on them compared to the others, however they are located in Canada so I could avoid customs. So I am looking for help in terms of these bags for sizing, laptop friendlyness and value. Thanks in advance I know this was a long one. New build coming together.

running a thick chain? 1/8"? what does that have to do with yr wheelset?

@ canice: was your homie running a road wheel with a fixxer? their track wheel should give a straight chainline...

I suppose that I should have been a bit more clear. Aerospokes are good for running a thick chain through your wheel. And it really only applies to messengers as they are the only people I know of who lock/unlock frequently and quickly.

how many of you guys grease the square spindles on your BBs? i hear you can split your cranks if you grease + over torque. supposedly the grease makes it easier to over torque.

Grease on the spindles is necessary. Crank arms will fuse to the spindle if you give it enough time. 90% of the time if you have squeaky cranks its from a lack of grease on the spindle.

AFAIK, Shimano doesn't say either way for square tapers and yes for Octalink. Campagnolo says absolutely not for square tapers.

However, a mechanical engineer I know who is an expert on clamped interference fit parts says grease on square taper cranks is definitely a good idea. What he also says is to torque the crank to spec once when the arms are installed and then leave them alone. The damage is done by repetatively retorquing the fixing bolts which "chases" the arms up the taper until they are distorted or crack.

ahhh, manufacturers say no but it makes sense to grease.

i roll with my mini u, wallet, fone, keys then:

regular biking days = backpack - inside are prolly books or school supplies, and some water bottles, larger u, multitool.

heavy biking days or critical mass = i usually have my yellow ampac - larger u, multi tool, tire levers, some bottles of water, camera maybe, extra tube, extra tire, and my floor pump sticking out of the top.

sometimes if i know i'll be waiting for a while, i bring my rubix cube ^^

this argument makes me laugh. putting your lock through a spoked wheel takes no more time than it does on an aerospoke. anyone who really does runs isn't going to be freaked out about a 3 second difference on their lockup.

So my bike has started making noises, coming from the crank/drive train. It never happened before, I don't know why it's doing it now.

It's like a creak whenever I apply a lot of pressure to the cranks to stop. I tried tightening the cranks even more but I don't think that helped that much...

What can it be? Extra strain on the chainring?

i've had this happen several times. the three things its been were: pedal not tightened all the way, pedal was shot, bb was shot. the last two times were the shimano cartridge bb failing and it sounded like a creak to the point where i thought my frame was toast.

just read your other posts... it could definitely be that you didn't get the BB all the way in the shell.

also, whoever said to loctite your cranks on .. that's absurd.

@ syzyguy ...

Loose ball: (the two separate cups suspend a spindle on the bearings. you can tighten between the two)

Sealed: (everything is internal. you can't adjust the tightness on the bearings, just the cartridge in the shell)

Sealed/Adjustable (cones don't have a lip to fit on the edge of the shell so they can float the bb a few mm in each direction):

I ride a Bianchi, but I hate Pista's. Every hipster and their mom have a chrome pista. In general modern Bianchi isnt that impressive.

you are right modern bianchi isnt as good as when it was made in italy. but you must admit there arent many complete track bikes at the same quality and price as a pista.

I love my pista and yes its a hipster machine, i dont care. i needed a new bike and this was brand new in 06 and i got it off criaglist for 200 off the sticker.

im still looking for a used pista concept in a 55 cm.

Running a chain through a 36 or 32 spoke wheel can be a minor annoyance and I didn't say it was a particularly good reason to purchase an aerospoke, just that it was about the only damned thing that they are good for.

CHROME PISTA represent!

stupid question, but did you have those wheels made or get them on ebay or something? i've been looking for a place that will sell me a built up wheelset with only the front machined and i haven't had much luck.

any cheaper chainring is going to be a piece of shit and you'll buy two or more in the lifetime of something quality.

I need to settle down on a proper crankset/bb...cuz like I said before my current is not really compatible 100%...I don't know if I should stick w/ 130bcd or if there is something else more common..

still can't disagree with this more. steez points aside, they're a great, affordable wheel for the track and super fucking durable wheel for the street. the rear isn't much worse weight wise than a phil to open pro, but the front is definitely heavy as nuts... which isn't as big of a deal on the track.

......

are those 130 or 133 like road cranks? the latter are pretty common. switching to suginos or something, would be more expensive, but you'd have an amazing set that would last you a grip. aebike has them for $179 regularly.

.......

re: wheel rub... i would put your front wheel on with your bike upright on flat ground. i noticed sometimes doing it upside down would cause it to pull a little to the right or left, ultimately making it rub on the fork crown and throwing off yr front end.

or wait... you said fork spinning. at the headset? it could be that your headset isn't packed properly, is too loose or even too tight (especially with threadless).
