San Francisco hip hotel recs

Heading to San Francisco next month. Love the city but have not been in over 10 years. Looking for a cool, hip but not too over the top (or expensive) hotel. I travel often for business so a 4-5 star hotel is NOT what I'm looking for. Location, style and value are key. Thanks for your help!

have you checked tripadvisor? I live very close to columbus motor inn on columbus in north beach and it's a great location (walking distance to recon/nort!) and you get free parking and wifi... it's not anything fancy though...

Clift Hotel is arguably "the hippest," but is also a bit pricey (starts @ $250 a night).

Yes, I know the uber-hip Cift and love it but I'm looking for a hidden gem on this trip. Does anyone know about B&B's in the Haight?

I've stayed at Clift for $195.
