Washing jeans -- buttoned or unbuttoned?

I've noticed that buttons have worn through the fly on a few pairs and wonder if it's better to leave jeans buttoned or unbuttoned before machine washing.

Sorry if this has been asked before.  I did look -- probably not enough, admittedly.

There’s a small questions thread, I assume for this case. 
 

for what it’s worth the buttons run through the fly in most of my jeans sooner or later but I don’t think it’s related to washing because I never button them before the wash.
