Herc was definitely the first DJ to start cutting between disco, funk, and soul records to get the sound that would shape hip hop culture, and he needs all the credit he can get because most people forget he even existed. Coke was Herc's first MC, and was swiftly joined by MC Clark Kent, and they became Kool Herc and the Herculoids.

Bambaataa came into the picture a few years after Herc and his crew- a good three to four years, actually. Which isn't to say he isn't hugely influential- when Bam used snippets of Kraftwerk for "Planet Rock" he essentially introduced the idea of sampling into not only rap music, but all electronics-based music.

herc started it here, but in JA, where herc is from, they were doing it from long time.... reggae is the father of rap music.

shit... i SAW outkast in 94... the roots were around before that. 91-94 was the pinnacle of hip hop as an artform, so far. im not saying nothing good has come out since then, but at that time so much good material was relesed that its hard to compare any other time to that.

and I still listen to rakim. his old stuff at least. cant fuck with the classics.
