so? that has nothing to do with anything. I wouldn't want to live in any country where they speak spanish.

heh he. Well, the poster's question wasn't necessarily "where would Horriblyjolly" want to live, but I understand your quip. Either way, for practical reasons, taking a language that is spoken by a large percent of the world's population is usually an excellent career move......that is why it was recommended. Not to mention that the "fashion scene" which the poster mentions being interested in, is no more prevalent in Germany than it is in Spain or even S. America for that matter (not to mention one has hot, tanned, armpits-shaven, raven-haired women....I will let you guess which one)........:D

people who take japanese classes for a while all have this weird thing where they have to do this whole "DON'T LEARN JAPANESE, IT'S TOO HARD. WAY HARDER THAN YOU THINK!" routine to anyone with even a passing interest in learning a bit of japanese.

i don't get it.

some kind of indirect self-ego-stroke?

yeah, it could be!

but on the real, i'm so glad a lot of my american friends speak japanese, even though it was very hard for them to learn it. when i don't know how to express something in english, i'll usually have a good way of saying it in japanese. it's also great when you don't want other people to know what you are talking about.

people who speak japanese really understand japanese culture more than people who have lived in japan a long time but do not speak it. so much of the culture is embedded in the language, like a code.

so, i highly recommend japanese. it actually is quite handy.
