WHO will be the NEXT SUPERJUNKIE???!!!

Recommended Posts

I see Greentea posting at least once in every thread, even in Supermarket to comment on tatami mats, carpets, rugs, whatever.

Mizanation flies by and cluster bombs half a dozen Superdenim threads mid-morning daily.

Chicken seems to be taking up the rear at a healthy clip.

Tragic seems to be taking a steady-as-she-goes approach, but he should be there by year's end.

Red---------uh... Red... is a golden sunflower.

haha, you guys are nuts.

about tatami mats, a little known fact is that in japan, you can buy decent half-size tatami mats for as low as 600 yen a piece (that's like $5 and change). they cost about $100 over here.

you can put them together on the floor and you have an instant tatami room.

i have 6 of them in my bedroom.

miz, do you know where i could find a barebones futon set around nyc / nj?

i like futon better than springed beds and my new apartment is tiny

my cousins have some they copped in nippon for like 12000 yen for shikibuton kakebuton and pillow

but i've only been able to find online stockists here and the markup leaves a bad taste in my mouth

yes, furniture in japan is cheaper and of better quality than in the states--kind of like jeans ;-)

here's what i've done, you can go to chinatown where they have very cheap futon/couches for sale. not manhattan chinatown, go to 8th ave. chinatown in brooklyn. quality isn't great, but it will hold you down.

or, you can look on craig's list and get a used futon which is usually a good way to go. you can buy the futon frame used and buy a new mattress. people are always selling their old futons....

thanks for the info miz

i'll probably check bk for a budget shikibuton and use western beddings for the time being

denim and furniture

versus

fast food and television

damn

well, if you want a quick and dirty shikibuton, you can do this (which is what we do at my crib):

1) *optional* go to a chinese furniture store and get one of their very hard thin mattresses. it's like a 3 inch board that is lightly padded. it should cost like $50-$70 i think. you can do without it, but it's nice to have that layer.

2) put an old comforter on top of that layer. fold the overlap in towards the center for extra padding. add another comforter if you want something a little softer.

3) put a egg crate or foam mattress pad on top of your comforter.

4) cover the whole thing with a padded mattress cover.

5) put a a fitted sheet on it.

that should give you the feel of a ghetto shikibuton. not as easy to store away, but it works for us....

basically, you can recreate the feel of a shikibuton by using many layers of comforters.
