best parts of grammar

skunked terms are wickedly controversial, eg: hopefully, data, decimate, effete, enormity, fulsome, impassionate, intrigue, & transpire

i have been reading (with interest) Garner's Modern American usage

he's hilarious

i keep a copy on my desk at work

but i wish i had another at home

DFW has a great essay about the ADMAU: tense present

funny to see Garner reference the article in an entry of the ADMAU

my latest grammatical epiphanies:

"vale of tears" not "veil of tears" (vale meaning "world"; i'd always imagined tears streaming on a crying person's face forming a veil)

and the whole gibe/jive/jibe confusion is finally sorted in my head (i shudder to think how many times i've said "that doesn't jive" [facepalm])

i am not a stickler for grammar

but i find it fascinating

also, etymology is another interest (obsession) of mine

but i'm not sure that warrants another threak
