What coat should I buy?

Recommended Posts

I need a very warm coat as I'm about to move out to Massachusetts, where the winters last about 6 months, it snows constantly and the temperature hovers somewhere between -10F and brass monkeys.

I'm looking more along the lines of a ski jacket type thing than a trenchcoat/anorak, but it has to be bloody warm. Functionality over style I'm afraid, but then again I don't want to look like a tool, and I don't really want something that weighs half my body-weight.

I do not like puffer jackets, camo, or fury hoods.

Oh, and my max spend is around £120 ($200).

Has anyone got any ideas? All the shops are getting in their summer stock and ski jackets are a bit thin on the ground...

some acronym should be pretty heavy duty. but just get yourself a thermal hoody from urban theyre only like 20 dollars. and a warm trench/peacoat. and wear em together, but dont do the gay ass hood flipped out over your collar things thats pretty lame. try to conceal it if possible but then again you said you didnt want to go for the whole trench trhing. what evs.

hey, i live in massachusetts and its gonna be tough without a down jacket if you are going to be walking outside for more than 5 minutes... if you decide to get a down puffy jacket, go with helly hansen

and corbin law, hood out of the collar isnt that bad...how can u have a hood bulging on the back of your neck with the hood tucked in?? its pretty uncomfortable like that...

you can avoid looking like a tool as much as you want ...but if you're cold you won't feel stylish ..you'll feel and look like a twit. get a down jacket...there's a reason we all wear them. its bone numbingly cold..and my bet is if you don't buy one before you arrive ...you sure as hell will within a day of having your nether regions frost bitten..i did.

Boston, or any other part of MA, is not that cold. Really. A wool peacoat or duffle will be fine. Layer a sweater or hoodie underneath, and wear a toque and gloves, and you're set...

come to montreal for a weekend....

if you want a ski jacket for about 200 bucks, try to grab some of the bigger brands snowboarding/skiing jackets on sale right now.

brands that some to mind are burton, helly hansen, north face, columbia, salomon, rossignol, 686, etc etc

basically, go to a big sports store and they'll have a bunch you can peruse.
