Music Producers / Studio Thread

What did you use? Those apps (more expensive ones) are extremely good imo....can't see what they are missing,

I don't have a clue. I played cello in high school, and we'd have to go into the labs and do tests on certain scales/time signatures/whatnot, but there was some midi-based program on those computer where you could just drag notes in different places, assign an instrument to them, and create your own music. Those programs suggested looked way more intensive (a good thing). I'll definitely take a look at some to play around with, moreso for fun and experimenting with sound than anything.

Okay, since nobody cared to answer, howabout this drum sound? You don't have to wait a minute to hear it either. It's called "Paris, Texas" by Gotan Project. You can get ahold of it here: http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=155718430

and listen to a 30 second sample of it through their "Buy Tracks" module. I'm looking for a drum sound explanation. If anyone has any insight, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks

There are lots of futuremusic producer interviews floating around. Try google video. Take what they say with a pinch of salt though as everyone always contradicts everyone else ( analog vs digital etc yawn )

Best way is to find your own sound through experimenting and messing around.

Let us talk about our productions and studios, maybe even get up on some superfuture collaborations. Feel free to ask any questions you may have about the world of production, be it techniques or gear.

To begin:

I use Ableton Live 7 w/ a bunch of plugins

MPD24/PadKONTROL/NanoKONTROL

KRK RP5 studio monitors

Edirol UA-25A interface

(Will post a picture soon)

using:

Logic Pro 9 w/ too many plugins to list

Mackie MR5's

Moog Little Phatty

Akai MPD

M-Audio M-Box Pro

here's a few samples that haven't really turned into anything yet, just playing w/ beats

a remix i actually finished, not too sure about the mix listening back on it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a-jRsaSG68M

destructodisk: that's sick. Did you use operator for the pad sound or what?

That pad is one that I created using the Albino 3 VST plugin + filters in Ableton

Here is a new beat that I made yesterday. Been fucking with sounds in Ableton quite a bit just trying to fill up the mix.

I'd love some feedback if any of you have it. I'm finally trying to show my stuff to more and more people!

Thanks guys. Yeah ROYALE I had pretty much every track running through a series of filters I made macros for and controlled in realtime with the padKONTROL, I'm really happy with the way the sounds all blended together.

and haploid, I agree, although I tend to spend very little time on arranging once I get my musical concepts recorded. all the tracks i have uploaded are recorded in one take launching clips manually through ableton. i prefer making lots and lots of shit in order to get better rather than investing a bunch of time on the finer details.. i want to hear people's reactions to the basic versions before i do.

here is another track i made back in august:

The hardest part of any track is completing it, I know, but your tracks will have a much more "polished" sound to them if you do arrange them. There is only so much you can do live, and tweaking parameters only adds so much interest to the track before it too gets dull. This is the problem I have with most IDM: the tweaking rather than the introduction of new musical concepts or rhythms.

i would say a midi controller would be the first thing to start with, just to get more comfortable laying down beats/melodies, followed by some monitors, if you want something cheap/simple and aren't really looking to play piano-esque melodies look into the Korg Nano series, it gets the job done and is like $50 i think
