vinegar wash for dry denim

I have heard that if you soak bleeding type fabrics like indigo in cold water with a little white vinegar they will hold their color better. Has anyone heard that or had any experience with that washing/preservation tecnique?

I have a pair if jeans (Ijin Material) that has a faint smell of vinegar. I asked my mom about this (she's very knowledgeable about sewing and stuff like that) and she said that vinegar has been used for keeping color for many years. I dont know if its true but thats what she said.
