Quality of designer tee shirts? Any advice is appreciated!

I was wondering if the quality of designer tee shirts are better than say that of american apparel or plain tees from hanes? Are all those expensive tees being sold for $50+(http://www.activeendeavors.com/department.asp?deptid=2750) have more durablity or comfort? What about the quality of tee shirts from a high end designer like say from dior where tees can go for over $100? The reason I ask is that I am an artist by hobby and was thinking of trying my hand at producing some really nice quality tees from some of the drawings I've sketched and sewing or applying different materials on the tee for different effects. These tees would probably be for more personal use and for my friends. I'm just concerned about the quality and comfort cuz I am a bit of a perfectionist and don't want my art printed on some cheap feeling tee. Price of the tee is less of a concern if it is well made and is the most comfortable to wear. Where would I be able to source high quality tees and what are some of the options available to me in terms of printing my designs? I'm not familiar at all on how to turn my artistic endeavors into an awesome tee so any advice is appreciated. Thanks!
