Sweaters: Fold 'em or hang 'em?

When I go to stores like Barney's and Blackbird, I notice that half of their knits are hung on hangers, and half are folded on shelves. What is the proper way to keep sweaters? Does it matter? I hear you get "hanger marks" in the shoulders if you hang them...if this is the case, why do stores hang some of their sweaters. It's a dumb question, but I thought I'd ask.

Stores will tend to rotate merchandise so that it never hangs too long. People like seeing things hung, as it lets the garment sit the way it should; but knits, particularly thinner ones, really ought to be neatly folded and not stacked too high, as their combined weight will press down and leave deep folding creases. I actually loosely roll them into soft bundles and will re-fold from time to time.
