unofficial photography/evolution/diary contest suggestion

Recommended Posts

Apologies in advance if this doesn't deserve a thread and should have been posted to the small questions thread. Not too many people visit that thread regularly and seeing how the threshold to start a new thread was somewhere around 'people kickflipping out of coffins' [my favourite btw], I decided to start one anyway.

With the recent activity in the photography thread, mixed opinions on the 2009 contest and the success of the Dirty Dozen +1 diary, I was wondering if there was any interest in having an unofficial contest that combined elements of each and would draw 'continued' participation.

A lot of photograhpy forums (eg:fredmiranda.com) have friendly weekly assignments/competetions and the work that's turned in is usually pretty amazing. On a weekly/monthly basis, we would vote/select a topic to shoot, something that everyone has access to and is open to interpretation. We have one/two weeks time to get out and shoot the topic and post process it however we like within the selected theme. Then at the end of that period we can all compare our images and comment on them. The focus wouldn't be so much on who wins each competetion but more a combination of denim porn, photo awe and motivation to get out and shoot more. So it's really not a competition at all, more of a diary of our evolution of our 'sick fadezzz' and learning to shoot better. I hope this made some sense - follow this link for more on just the weekly assignments aspect

There really isn't a prize but we could have itty-bitty gifts given out from a small paypal pool. Seeing as how a lot of us have stocked up enough denim to survive a bunker buster, we could just pick our favourites and use the same pair for all our submissions. The pair would somehow need to be integrated into all the assignments.

An example of an assignment might be something really simple like 'Serious Coffee addiction'. The winning submissions each week would be posted in an online journal with a small writeup on the denim/location/equipment by the winner.

any interest in this? discuss..

i like it. i want to get out and shoot more. but i dont get how we would combine all the elements.

maybe a couple more examples??

sorry about the winded low entropy post above. I'll try to elaborate on what I meant by combining elements with a cheezy example instead.

A sample assignment could be 'Still Waiting'. I'm not too creative so I would probably shoot something obvious such as waiting at a bus-stop or waiting for someone at a coffee-shop/restaurant. I'd document my denim evolution and include a small footnote on the location / area / activity / equipment / settings / processing.

Beatle did an excellent job on her Dirty Dozen stint - have a look at that thread to get a better idea. We could totally toss out the denim/diary aspect but we would run into the same dry discussions on technical aspects of the image as you might find on photograpy forum assignments.

that would be just as interesting too and was my original intent but seeing how the denim evolution thread is the holy land, I thought this might generate more interest.

Do you think you could start a new thread in the right category (photography is currently under superculture) about this? I'm not allowed to edit titles or move threads around. thanks.

I like the idea of photo assignment --> discuss, but lets just leave denim out of it.
