Really? If someone were to call me a cunt I'd assume they were attempting to deride me.

To me, 'He is a cunt' is similar to something like 'He is an arsehole', or 'He is a dickhead', etc. Even at times when it is used with friends in constructions such as 'You jammy/lucky/stupid cunt' I would say it is more of a jocular insult than an endearing term.
