Ron Mueck Hyperrealism

i saw it... hated it. its disgusting and personally i think its not very attractive art, in the sense that it will not be remembered.

Did you hate it because it was disgusting? Why will it not be remembered? Is all art that won't be remembered inherently pointless?

I think what's most fascinating about the work is not the scale, but the expressions that Mueck is so adept at capturing. The scale simply removes the piece from usual dimensions and presents an aspect of awe and forces the viewer into responding to what are (occasionally) perfectly typical moments. My favorite piece is "Mother and Baby" in the manner in which it captures the multitude of aspects to childbirth in a single instant: joy, disgust, horror, what have you. While Carl may disagree with me, I have to agree with Mueck that photography generally does not capture these moments in the manner that these pieces do.

I suppose I am also intrigued by your "disgust," as well. These are some of humanities most powerful moments captured in a progressive medium: childbirth/pregnany, death, isolation and discomfort ("ghost"). Admittedly, some of the pieces are irrelevant. I can't say that I'm a fan of the purely abstract pieces, they're not nearly as powerful as the others.

^true, maybe the art was meant to bring these feelings out in people, ignoring the concept of love/hate. personally, i just didn't like it, especially after seeing an amazing annie leibowitz photography exhibit and career retrospective in the next gallery over. when i walked back out into this exhibit afterwards, sorta killed the buzz of what i had just seen. it just doesn't appeal to me in any way, shape, or form. personally, i find it a bit obnoxious, but maybe thats what he's going for. maybe hyperrealism tries to take the viewer out of their most comfortable state of mind (when viewing art) and alienates them from the comfort they do enjoy normally at a museum.

naim'sayin?

EDIT: to expand on why i think it won't be remembered - i don't think its good art. now thats just my opinion, but i feel like there are ways to push reality and expression of form to its limits without alienating the viewer. maybe i just don't like how this was juxtaposed to the exhibit i had seen previously, but i know i'd be happy not ever seeing this again. i thought it was boring, grotesque, pretentious, and i found it generally uninteresting.
