ADIDAS is buying REEBOK for around 1,5 Billion USD!

Adidas wants to get closer to NIKE

German Sneaker and Running-Store Company was sold by Karstadt/Quelle this morning. Buyer is the "Hannover Invest", which nobody knows if it was seperatly or a manager-buy-out!

actually, it's for USD 3.8 billions.

i don't think it'll make a real difference. both brands are very distinctive and will continue their courses.

adidas is paying a 34% premium on reebok's yesterday price. personally, i don't think this buy out will drastically change the landscape of the shoe business. i think the main motivations of the merger are to pool together marketing, financial, production, and other back end resources. of course, one less competitor and more pricing power in the market place won't hurt either. the combined company will have a bit over 20% of the shoe business in america, versus about 36% of nike. the markets apparently liked the deal, both companies' stocks have gained, with reebok for obvious reasons.

on a separate note, a retail analyst this morning recommended buying true religion jeans's stocks. sure sign to start shorting this stock!!

Quote: maybe now reebok will re-think those f-ugly hip hop "celebrity" (Jay-Z, Nelly, G-Unit) sneakers.

I dunno. I reckon those have got to be making good money (in fact, I'm half thinking that might be why Adidas acquired Reebok). The branding - which is one of the most cash intensive things that these companies do - is performed by the artist peddling the shoe. These things cost fuck all to make and it's not like they agonized over R&D and design for years before sticking 'G-Unit' on the side of some piece of shit that wouldn't sell for more than $29.99 otherwise.

Well this gives Adidas more market share. Maybe they can class up Reebok a bit. Or just leave it alone and use it as a steady revenue stream (if Reebok shoes continue to sell well).

It is good to have a brand in an industry that people can make fun of. If everyone made great shoes and were on top of things marketing-wise, how would we know what is cool? There isn't enough sarcastic Supertalk to go around. It would be chaos. ;)

Reebok does make some weak product though. That's my opinion. But seriously, just look at what they sell!

true, it's 3,8 USD billions.

just bought adidas stock yesterday. will see. next year is world soccer champs and adidas will be big player.

Karstadt/Quelle sold not only RUNNERSPOINT, but also SINN LEFFERS and 75 Department stores.

The "rap shit" sells & Reebok just started in on a 10 year exclusive licensing deal with both the NBA & NFL

last year.

I'm surprised they sold... But I'm guessing they spent a couple years building value with something like this in mind?

A lame duck brand right now for sure. Hell Nike has Converse...

I guess I'm asking too much for a "celebrity" hiphop shoe to also be stylish. My gripe with them though is in the similarity of them all. I'm sure these shoes aren't really made for me but they seem like the same shoe (especially G-Units and S. Carters).

I will say that Reebok is doing a great job with its "I am" campaign and would benefit from Adidas' R&D prowess.

the biggest footwear market is basketball right now....the buyout is probably a good power play against nike...

even though reebok doesnt have very good brand equity in b-ball, it might be a smart move on adidas' part to combine the marketing bankroll of the two so they can compete with the caliber of athletes nike controls....

Gotta close that strategic gap! Where they are vs. where they want to be.. shit back in 94 I was playin in the school yard in my Reebok pumps and Starter jacket. I was like I NEED those Reeboks and I NEED that Starter.

I never realized Cliche skateboards was part of Adidas, they did a shoe with Lakai.
