I had some Logitech Z-340's for a long time and they were great but I don't think they're made anymore. Apparently the new equivalent is the X-230, and the Z-4 is slightly more highend but still inside your price range.

i bought a pair of edifer speakers that i use at home.. I generally find that even with a higher end speaker, laptop audio output does not give out enough power unless u have an amp.

I focus more on having a better headset for my laptop use. I bought this amp called the "PA2v2". is a handheld amp which is the size of half a dollar bill.. it runs on 2 AA batteries and allows superb low to mid tone notes that you will never hear from just using the laptop jack... I bought a pair of Grado SR60's recently too and they sound amazing. SInce my grado's are open headphones, i also have a pair of el cheapo Koss "the Plug" in ear headphone that i bought off ebay. they are under 10 dollars and they are pretty good paired with the PA2V2 Amp.
