altering knitwear

google searches have yeilded no help. here is my dilemma. a while ago i picked up this beautiful lanvin cardigan from a friend which is a wool/mink blend but i haven't really worn it out since the sizing is off. i am a 38" chest and this thing measures about 22" pit to pit. the sleeves are a tad large as well. i called a couple tailors asking if they could alter it to be slimmer in the chest and arms but both claimed that it isn't possible because knits tend to run when you cut off the excess material. the shoulder construction also strange and might complicate things, being a kind of semi raglan.

does anyone else here have experience tailoring knitwear? i really want this piece in my wardrobe but if i cant fix it i'll have to sell it.
